Ever Wondered What a Chemical Peel Does for the Skin?
Updated: Jan 3, 2023
The difference about the professional CHEMICAL peels or a sexy term that we like to use….like Exfoliating Peels. Why do we choose the term Exfoliating over CHEMICAL, hummmmm? Well, which sounds better to you? If you say CHEMICAL whhha hahah!!!! It sounds like a mad scientist with several test tubes, and flowing steaming reactions taking place. When you say Exfoliating ummm ummm ummm, it sounds sophisticated and sexy like a girl with a wide brim hat on a white beach. SO that is why we say … Exfoliating Peels. AND that is the purpose, to Exfoliate the skin.
Let us start off by saying…… Exfoliating Peels may not be the best choice for all skin types. If you have a beautiful darker complexion, an Exfoliating Peel could alter that beautiful dark skin tone….leave you with long-lasting discoloration. But not to worry! We have other treatments that work just as well for others with darker skin tones.
According to healthline, “Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin from the surface of your skin using a substanceâ€. So, the peel sheds the dead skin by peeling off and has a cellular turnover meaning “new skin†makes your skin look smoother & healthier..
Why do we want to shed & gain new skin?
The purpose is to resurface the skin and stimulate new collagen and healthy skin cell growth, resulting in a radiant complexion to look smoothe, younger and healthier. Some peels treat discoloration, acne, scars, wrinkles, tone and texture.
There are 3 different peels: Superficial. Moderate & advanced. Each peel removes the top layers of your skin to different depths, which lets smooth skin grow back.
Superficial:
Superficial peels use mild agents that remove dull, rough, blotchy dead skin cells to brighten the skin. This treatment is usually called a “lunchtime peelâ€. This lighter peel helps brighten and smoothes the skin. A mild acid is applied to your face, neck, sometimes chest, or hands. You can wear makeup again the same day, It usually takes 0 to 3 days to fully recover.
Moderate:
Medium peels involve a slightly stronger agent that penetrates deeper. This peel removes skin cells from the top layer to the upper part of your middle layer of skin. They’re better at targeting age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, acne and uneven skin tone.
Advanced:Â
Deep peels use even stronger agents to make more dramatic improvements in the skin’s appearance. This peel removes skin cells from the top portions of the skin to the mid to lower layer of your dermis. These peels assist people with moderate lines, deep wrinkles or shallow scars.
With any of these procedures you may experience a spicy tingling sensation to the skin while the solution is applied. After the peel you may experience some redness, mild irritation, shedding of the skin and even scabbing.
Most importantly What is my mantra??? Stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen. This is because your new skin is sensitive to the sun’s rays and you are more likely to burn and discolor your skin again….. Which may be the reason we did the peel in the first place.
It usually takes approximately 2-4 weeks for your skin to recover and see that luminous look. Exfoliating Peels should be repeated every 6-8 weeks. I recommend to always keep your skin moisturized and protected with a broad spectrum sunscreen of 30+.
